Rebranding a Photography Business

I’ve been very quiet on the blog of late and I feel I need to give an explanation. Over the past few years I’ve learned a thing or two, and have been ever evolving as a photographer. The past couple of years, I have to admit I hit a low point with the business where I just wasn’t sure I should keep it going. It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy it, because I love the whole process. (Well, taxes aren’t fun, but I digress…) I hesitated because I wasn’t shooting for me. I wasn’t creating the art that I had set out to, rather I was simply in the grind. Add in that I’ve always just been part-time at this, juggling being a full-time work at home mama with a husband that travels for a living, and life was a bit chaotic. I was photographing everything and everyone that wanted to pay me to be honest, all while still doing freelance design and taking care of my kiddos. I got stressed, and I wasn’t happy. I lost the artist in me.

So this year I decided to make a change. I’ve taken a step back from freelance and I have decided to focus on my photography business full-time. And to narrow it down to the genres that give me the most joy, and that is high school senior portraits, family and lifestyle. I am actually attending my first photography conference12 in October, which focuses entirely on high school senior photography and the business surrounding it. I am so flippin’ excited to meet and learn everything I can about this side of the business from some of the top senior photographers in the country. My hope is to come home revitalized and ready to hit the ground running. I will most likely still do a wedding or event here and there, but it will not be a focus of my business moving forward. All are amazing photographers and awesome people.

Since I decided to make a definitive shift, I needed an updated look that truly represented ME. Not the me I thought I needed to be, not just the business professional that wanted your business, but the artist that craves creating authentic, meaningful portraits. And sharing more of my authentic self along with it. So in the next few weeks I will be making the shift and out with the old, in with the new. As some of you might know, my background is in graphic design. For those of you who don’t, I have a Bachelor’s of Fine Art Degree and before I started this photography venture I worked in branding and advertising design for about 6 years. So photography was a natural step within my artistic background and gave me an advantage in many ways starting out because, simply, I didn’t have to pay anyone to come up with all my branding materials and website. I have done all this on my own, and as such it’s takes a long time to make any significant changes! Client work has to come first, and then there’s family and my husband’s business (of which I am the creative designer for as well.) So when I say my brand is a labor of love, I am completely serious, I am the labor and I love it <3

This new image, it’s not only what I see of myself now, but what I hope to be for the future. So without further ado, here is a sampling of the design direction you will see taking shape for Dynae Levingston Photography soon 🙂
